Summer time in Normandie, France • L'été sur la plage de Dieppe, Normandie

ENGLISH (la traduction française suit)

This summer I went to spend few days in Normandie, in the beautiful city of Dieppe ! I had the kids playing around me so I had to stay mainly in the beach area to sketch, but I got many stories happening around me that kept me busy with my sketchbook…

My favorite spot to draw was the red lecture cabin "Lire à la plage" (Read on the beach) where the municipality of Dieppe offers people comfortable seats and nice books to read, no mobile phone allowed ! Here you can see 3 generations of people enjoying books, or making activities with their kids: Origami, painting on stones or playing games…

People reading books ! It sounds amazing…

No smoking, no food, no sleeping and no mobile phone allowed… and this is full !

The beach is made of big grey stones that make a constant and caracteristic noise when the waves roll over them.

Beautiful view on the Hotel Castel Royal… !

Dieppe is surrounded by high cliffs. People leaving up there see their garden getting smaller and smaller each year, the cliff getting closer to their house !

The southern cliffs of Dieppe, Normandie
The castle became the museum of Dieppe
In a nice coffee shop on the beach, a father and his sons came to play Django Reinardht jazz songs. They kindly waited for me to finish to stand up and pass the hat !

Gipsy music on the beach of Dieppe

I chose this spot to draw the small wooden beach cabins but as I was sketching I could hear all the conversations between old friends gossiping about their neighbors.
I learned that :
1. You need to wait 4 to 5 years to obtain a cabin which you can rent on a yearly basis.
2. Miss L. is generally too snobish to say Hello, but yesterday she finally did ! However, she didn't go further in the conversation…
3. The dog of Mister G. bit the child of N. and (the animal) got sick the day after… Is there a relation between the 2 facts ?

Neighbors and gossips

In order to remain happy, hide yourself, in Dieppe.

Vacation in France

Here are some drawings I did this summer in Drôme provençale in the south of France. We rented a house in Poët-Laval, a funny name for a beautiful medieval village…

A small passage in Poët-Laval

Always nice to draw family around !
5 kilometers from Poët-Laval, you can visit Dieulefit, the closest city where they have a gorgous street market once a week during the summer…

To carry the fruits and vegetables you bought in the market, you need of course a nice and big bag…
Nearby, you can go to La Fontaine Minérale, in Pont-Barret where you eat excellent french gastronomy and on saturday nights of summer, listen and dance at the "guinguette"…

A big english bus where the crew is actually sleeping…

Naya enjoying her strawberry ice cream…

Toam prefered his green lemon one…

In Paris, I found some time to work a bit on parisian roofs

Poët Laval, Drôme provençale - France

End of august, we rented a house with my whole family in Drôme provençale, in France…
The house itself is located in a medieval village - part of the association "the most beautiful villages of France" - and it was as nice to go and draw the village above ! Nice also to take the time to draw my family, all relaxed and willing not to move for few minutes !

Château de Biron - France

When I was visiting the South-West of France in July, we went to visit a big castle named Château de Biron, in Périgord (Dordogne). On the top of a hill, this impressive building from the XIIth century gives an amazing view on the countryside all around until the pyrenees mountains…

Villeréal - France

Villeréal is a Bastide (city from the Middle Age time) in the South-Ouest of France, in the department of Lot-et-Garonne, near Toulouse. The city was created in 1267 and you can enjoy there the old market hall in the center of the city, surrendered by medieval buildings with "colombages" and the tall gothic church, Notre-Dame…
We spent 1 week in july in Villeréal, invited by very good friends who invited us as well to the great summer activities that the city provides for the habitants and the big amount of tourists…
We went to the markets of course, the great occasion to test the amazing gastronomic specialties from the area, including great wines.
We enjoyed the annual Bodéga, the city center is filled with groups of music, all kinds of styles and the sound mixture is also sometimes very interesting! People can buy food and eat all together on tables located all around the hall, they seemed very happy, as I was. This year was the 20th birthday of this event, a good excuse to enjoy twice more the wine and the music.
We also went to spend an evening at the hippodrome where they perform trotting races. We can bet on the horses and scream to encourage them during the dinner, again a great occasion to enjoy life in France !
