ישנן תקופות בהן ניתנת לנו האפשרות להתבונן במצבים ופריטים אליהם כמעט ולא שמנו לב בימי השגרה. 

אחד מהם ארע בחנוכה, בשבוע שעבר.

מעניקות יופי מסוג אחר כשהן דלוקות ומוארות

לאחר ציפיה ארוכה לזמנן המתאים בשנה. 

החנוכיות יציבות ונוקשות והן מקבלות נופך שונה לגמרי כשהנרות יחד איתן.

באותם רגעים הצירופים, העיטורים המוזהבים, הטיפוגרפיה המעניינת

וכל אותן מחשבות עמוקות וגלומות

זוכים סוף סוף ליחס של כבוד.

Tourists

In the past few weeks I've visited Neve Sha'anan a couple of times, with my sketchbooks, fountain pen and some good company. Few times before I came there to taste the "local cuisine", whether it was Eritrean, Chinese or Indian. But never before have I sketched there. The first sketching visit was with a good friend, also a sketcher. The second time I came was during the sketchcrawl with a much bigger group. In both occasion I felt an unease regarding my act: coming to a neglected part of town as a spectator, an outsider, in a sort of "expedition" to capture the life of the "other" residents of Tel Aviv. But both visits turned to be quite great: Bar hopping from one Romanian pub to the other, becoming ourselves an attraction of its own right, having crowds of locals towering above us, looking at our sketches and sharing their critics about our art. 

Though the sketching experience turned out to be great, I can't escape the feeling that also in the future times I'll visit there it'll be in the shoes of a tourist, a visitor and a mere spectator, not as a resident of the same city. 

נווה שאנן - משרבטים את התושבים הבלתי נראים

לתל אביב יש הרבה פנים, כמו לכל עיר גדולה, יש לה אזורים יוקרתיים, שכונות חדשות ונוצצות, אזורים היסטוריים משוחזרים ומשופצים. זה תמיד נחמד לשרבט שם, אבל לפעמים מרגישים כמו בתוך גלויה, חסרים החיים האמיתיים.

ליציאת השרבוט האחרונה נפגשנו בנווה שאנן - מקום שבדרך כלל לא נמצא ברשימת האטרקציות התיירותיות והרבה ישראלים נוהגים להמנע מלהכנס לשם. הדבר שהכי בולט כשאתה נכנס לשכונה - בקושי רואים שם ישראלים ושומעים עברית. הישראלים היחידים הם קבוצות של צלמים שצדים תמונות "סקסיות" של עוני, או כמה זוגות בורגניות מצפון תל אביב שמחפשות אוכל אוטנטי. בשכונה מתגוררים לרוב עובדים זרים, רובם מאפריקה ואסיה, התושבים הבלתי נראים, מהם בדרך כלל אנחנו נוהגים להתעלם.

כשהתלבטתי אם להביא את הקבוצה שלנו לשם לא הייתי בטוחה אם התושבים לא ירגישו קצת כמו בגן חייות. אבל קיוויתי שציור פחות אגרסיבי מצילום, ויותר מתמזג עם הסביבה ומזמין אינרקציה. קיוותי שיקבלו אותנו בסדר, וכך היה.

התחלנו לשרבט ביחד כקבוצה, לאט לאט התפזרנו לעורך המדרחוב. כל ה"מקומיים" קיבלו אותנו בצורה ידידותית, מסוקרנים ומציצים במה שאנחנו מציירים, אבל בצורה עדינה, חלק מהם אפילו ביקשו שנצייר אותם.

זה היה באמת יום שרבוט באווירה מיוחדת, הנה מה שהספקתי לתפוס, הלוואי וידיים שלי היו מהירם כמו העיניים!

Neve Sha'anan, Tel Aviv - A journey in Eritrea

For the last scketchcrawl in Tel Aviv, we met in a neighborhood called Neve Sha'anan.
It's actually the name of a street and an area where I like to go from time to time to eat food from Eritrea. A lot of people from this part of the world are living there and it's nice to see hairdresser shops specialised in african draids and their beautiful typography written on the window of the shops.

Stormy weather on Jaffa

Waiting an hour under a strong rain on a parking lot waiting for your son going out from his capoera lesson doesn't sound very exciting… But when you are set in your car, have your sketchbook with you, watching the sea under a stormy weather, black clouds competing with sun in a rage of wind and rain, graphical lines on the floor, black cat calling you desperately from outside, palm trees dancing in the wind… It may change your perspective !

Last Summer Sun

I'm posting my sketches late, as usual. Had to wait for the ink to dry ;)

It is raining outside but in my drawings you can still see people enjoying one of the last weekends of summer. It is always a pleasure sketching up people on the beach: first- because half naked bodies are a fun subject to sketch, and second- because beach is always a fun place to be at. Warm sun, warm sand and a warm chat with old and new friends. 

I set with some of Felix Scheinberger's students, chatting about their Israeli Experience, a chat I remember nothing of by now. But I do remember admiring their sketches and the way they draw my country. It's not that the hand of a German students holds the pen differently, it is how the eye of a German student captures what I take for granted in my homeland.

Municipality of Tel Aviv by night

I am not going to describe again why the Urban sketchers went to draw to the municipality this night, many sketchers did it in this blog before, it will be an occasion to go backwards and enjoy their work… What I felt during this session is a kind of urge to draw fast and clear the people passing in front of me, not only because they never staid around very long but also because of the music played by the DJ. It's hard to explain but I think because it was a bit too loud, I had to close myself in a bubble of high concentration and be only focused on my models, as if they were isolated in a cloud. I supprised myself not even noticing that some people were actually standing right in front of me and staring at me drawing - I almost had a choc when they talked to me ! I lose all my confidence when it happens in general ! Anyway, here is my production, I added washi tape on my drawings after when I got back home… Kind of collage added to the simple pencils and watercolor because I felt that it didn't describe well enough the kind of trendy and "artistic" caracters we had in front of us. If I felt it was one of the most difficult exercice of urban sketching I did, the experience was extremely intense and I had a lot of fun
